When you place an outgoing call with your NumberBarn number, you don't just want people to see your phone number and city and state. You want your name or your company's name to show up in their caller ID. Your caller ID name, also known as CNAM, is a feature that isn't configurable from within your account, but it may be supported depending on the underlying carrier of your phone number with NumberBarn. A CNAM is essentially a 15-character name that may display when you call other numbers from that number.
If you need the CNAM updated for a specific number, please contact our customer support team and we can determine if this can be updated for your number.
Your CNAM can be a mixture of letters, numbers, and spaces totaling a maximum of 15 characters. Be sure to include the CNAM value you want for your number when you contact support. This can be a person's name or a business name of your choosing.
CNAM for Toll-Free Numbers
As of January 2023, we now support CNAM on toll free numbers. If you need this configured, follow the process above. Please be aware that your updated CNAM will only show up when you call landlines. It does not work with mobile numbers.
Does my CNAM transfer when I port to a new carrier?
When you port a number to another carrier, the CNAM does not transfer with it. That said, most carriers should store your CNAM for about 30 days. If you port away, just contact your new carrier/service provider and ask them to set that up for you to minimize or eliminate any downtime with your CNAM record.
What is the default CNAM for new numbers?
NumberBarn and NumberGarage only create CNAMs for our numbers by request. We do not report any information about you or your numbers to any of the CNAM databases by default. If you do not submit a CNAM value, only the telephone number will show up in the caller ID when you place outbound calls.
What if my CNAM doesn't show up when calling other numbers?
Especially in the case of mobile numbers, we cannot guarantee that carriers will show your caller ID name (CNAM) to their subscribers. But we can always check to make sure it has been submitted to our carriers correctly.
