🔍 Before You Begin
What you will need:
- Read ▶️ Port Away NumberBarn Number ⚙️
- Follow all standard Port Away steps
- Gather your Port Away credentials
- An active Google Voice account in good standing
- SMS/Text Messaging activated on your NumberBarn number
Why is a workaround needed?
Google Voice only accepts wireless numbers. All NumberBarn numbers are classified as wireline (landline). A direct port from NumberBarn to Google Voice is not possible.
The workaround is to first port your NumberBarn number to an intermediate wireless carrier, converting it from wireline to wireless, and then port from that carrier to Google Voice.
⚠️ Toll-free numbers are not supported by Google Voice and cannot be ported using this process
⚠️ These instructions apply to personal Google Voice accounts only. For Google Fi, use the standard Port Away process. For Google Workspace managed accounts, see Google's Workspace porting guide.
📋 Tips
Check Google Voice Portability Before Starting
| 🌐 | Check the Google Voice Number Porting Tool before starting. You must be signed in to your Google Voice account and have SMS activated on your NumberBarn number to use this tool. |
What the tool results mean:
| Result | What to do |
| "Porting your mobile number to Google Voice is unavailable... area we don't currently support" | Google Voice cannot support your number's area code. A port to Google Voice is not possible. |
| "At this time, Voice doesn't port numbers from your carrier" | Google Voice can support your rate center. Continue with the steps below. |
📌 SMS/Text Messaging must be active on your NumberBarn number to use the portability checker. Texting is not available on the Port Away plan. See Change Service Plan ⚙️ if you need to enable it first.
Recommended Intermediate Carrier
| 💡 | A prepaid wireless carrier SIM card is the most cost-effective option. Available at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, or Amazon for approximately $5 to $10. |

⚠️ Things to Know After Porting
- Mobile numbers typically port to Google Voice within 24 to 48 hours. Numbers that were originally wireline may take longer.
- Once porting is complete, you will need to set up a new mobile service plan and add your new number as a forwarding phone in Google Voice to continue receiving calls on your mobile device.
- If you already have a Google number on your account, it will be replaced by the ported number and removed 90 days after porting completes.
