💡 What is it?
An MVNO, or Mobile Virtual Network Operator, is a wireless provider that uses another company’s cellular network instead of operating its own towers.
MVNOs often provide lower-cost wireless service while using the same underlying network infrastructure as the major carriers.
Popular MVNOs include:
- Boost Mobile
- Cricket Wireless
- Google Fi
- Metro
- Mint Mobile
- Red Pocket
- Spectrum Mobile
- Ting
- Visible
- Xfinity Mobile
⚙️ How it works
MVNOs and Number Porting
When porting a number away from NumberBarn to an MVNO, the MVNO submits the transfer request to move the number onto their network.
NumberBarn numbers are classified as wireline/landline numbers, which means:
- Ports usually take longer than wireless-to-wireless transfers
- The process typically takes 3 to 10 business days
- The submitted porting information must match exactly
This includes:
- Account Number
- PIN
- Authorization Name
- Service Address
Why MVNO Ports Sometimes Fail
Some MVNOs use simplified or automated porting systems designed primarily for wireless-to-wireless transfers.
Because NumberBarn numbers are wireline numbers:
- Additional fields may be required
- Manual review may be needed
- The provider may need to submit the request differently
A common issue is when the MVNO:
- Leaves required fields blank
- Uses “Prepaid Subscriber” instead of your actual account name
- Omits the Account Number or PIN
- Does not identify the request as a wireline port
These issues can result in delayed or rejected port requests.
📌 Things to Know
Verify Carrier Portability First
Not every MVNO supports:
- Every rate center
- Every geographic area
- Rural exchanges
- Certain wireline numbers
Before purchasing or porting a number:
- Confirm the MVNO supports your phone number
- Check that the carrier supports the number’s rate center
Porting Timelines May Vary
MVNO ports are not instant.
Most ports complete within:
- 3 to 7 business days
- Up to 10 business days in some cases
Weekends and holidays are not included.
