There are a number of questions we receive about toll-free numbers (TFN). This article aims to first talk about how they work and to answer some of the common questions that arise.
What is a toll-free number (TFN)?
At its core, calls to a TFN are free, or at no charge, to the caller. Traditionally, companies would obtain TFNs to encourage customers and potential customers to call them by eliminating the financial burden associated with long-distance calling.
But we must keep in mind that someone still has to pay for that call. And in this case, the company, as the end-user or authorized user of the TFN agrees to pay for any calls to that number.
Will I be charged for domestic calls to my NumberBarn or NumberGarage TFN?
When you obtain a TFN through NumberBarn or NumberGarage calls to your number are not subject to additional charges. Instead, they are included in your normal minute allotment for your account.
Can people from other countries call my TFN?
Perhaps you have friends or customers overseas and you want to know if they can dial your TFN. The short answer is that it's highly unlikely that they'll be able to dial the number from another country -- but it totally depends on the carrier and country. If for some reason they are able to dial the number, it's very likely that they'll be billed for the call, sometimes costing more than if they were to dial a local, US number.

Does NumberBarn block international calls to my TFN?
NumberBarn does NOT block calls to TFNs from international callers. If calling doesn't work, it's more likely something on the caller's side preventing them from calling the number.
What are some alternatives to allow international callers to reach me?
Traditionally, companies offer both a toll-free and a local calling option to their customers. If you haven't already considered this, we offer a huge selection of numbers to choose from and you can probably find one that pairs nicely with your TFN.
Other alternatives might include encouraging frequent international callers to obtain other VoIP services that allow them to obtain US-based numbers to which they can easily call toll-free numbers. If they don't want to sign up for service with NumberGarage, they can also check out Skype or WhatsApp.
